Dragons. Scaled beasts, they're the core of our land. Without them, we wouldn't be able to protect the kingdom from the wildmen, wouldn't be able to harvest treefruit, and countless other things. If you're to be a rider, you must know as much about dragons as possible.
DIET: Dragons must eat meat. A woolybeast when the dragon is young will do for each day, and as they age they will need more. When they reach maturity, two bull milk-horses should be eaten each day, and more around Flight time.
Every rider should keep a supply of devil's weed on hand at all times. The plant, when eaten, helps a dragon to produce more, hotter flames, as well as strengthening their bones. In the weyr, there are always at least a dozen of the plants growing near the prey pens, and bundles of dried devil's weed are kept in the kitchens for traveling.
MATING HABITS: Dragons prefer to mate within their species. A female will take her first Flight (a mating ritual, the males who wish to mate with the female will show off for her and try to "catch" her in a short chase) when she reaches sexual maturity; usually at about 18 years of age. Up to 10 eggs will be laid four months after the Flight if the mating is successful. The female will not take another Flight for a few years, depending on how many other laying females there are.
A male and female will only be "mates" until the female's next flight. The male will not Fly with another female unless there is a shortage of males in his breed and he is needed to ensure the breed continues. Once the female Flies again, the male might Fly with her again, or wait for another female.
EGGS AND YOUNG: The eggs are about the size of
There are FIVE species of dragons. Here is a list and basic descriptions of each.
Felinian: The most cat-like of all the dragons. They behave much like your average house cat: Sleeping in the sun, disdainful looks when you try to get them to do something and such things. As for their looks, they have a body rather like that of a Siamese. Long and lanky with a small head and wide-set horns, large eyes. They use their long tails more than any others, and are more vocally expressive. Wings are small but wide at the base. They always have blue or yellow eyes, and their legs, head and tail are a darker colour than the rest of their body. Their main body colour is usually a lighter shade of grey, blue, brown or red.
Fillketst: These are the war dragons. Larger and thicker, they have wingspans twice that of other breeds, and also weigh much more. They're dedicated and steadfast, with no love for those who waste time. Their moods are the hardest to guess, and even their rider can have a hard time knowing exactly how they are feeling. Their hide is the thickest, and they can produce the largest amount of flames. Colours are usually dark and mottled, shades of black, grey, green and red. Eyes are grey or brown.
Thersn: These are the "average" dragons. They are the ones you see in your mind when you think of a dragon. All the colours possible, with the exception of white, in jewel-like shades. They are proud and
